Army Net-Centric Data Strategy Conferences

ANCDS Semantic Technology Forum

The U.S. Army Net-Centric Data Strategy Center of Excellence, in support of the Office of the Army Chief Information Officer (CIO/G-6), presented the Net-Centric Data Strategy Semantic Technology Forum on 17 September 2008. This intensive, one-day event was held in conjunction with the 2008 Joint Symposium in Atlantic City, NJ.

The forum focused on the latest advancement in semantics and its potential for producing understandable data and interoperable data sources. The purpose of the forum was to increase awareness of the vital role that semantic technologies play in advancing the Army’s net-centric vision of an integrated, interoperable, and understandable data environment that ultimately enables decision superiority. The forum included three featured sessions: Ontology Spectrum presented by Dr. Leo Orbst, Counterinsurgency Warfare presented by Dr. William Mandrick, and Data Mediation presented by Michael Mansell and Anthony Petosa. The forum was well-received by all attendees.

Army Architecture Day at LandWarNet

The initial Army Architecture Day took place on 18 August 2008 as part of this year's LandWarNet conference. The goal of this forum was to share common interests, discuss key initiatives and create new partnership opportunities while adhering to the theme of collaboration and transparency among the members of the Army community. Judy Pinsky provided attendees with an ANCDS situation update. Jim Blalock and Michelle Dirner gave an overview of the relationship between Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Data Strategy; in addition, Dirner facilitated a strategic question and answer session. The Architecture Day was well received by participants and will likely become a permanent part of LandWarNet.

The Joint Consultation, Command & Control Information Exchange Data Model (JC3IEDM)-SOA Pilot (the name of this pilot has recently been changed to Army C2 Data Services Pilot) was demonstrated throughout the day by Dave Vincent. The JC3IEDM-SOA Pilot demonstrated the adoption of a Master Data Management (MDM) with Service Oriented Architectures. Throughout the LandWarNet conference, the JC3IEDM-SOA Pilot was well attended. Vincent and Bruce Montgomery answered countless questions and discussed the Pilot and its benefits to Warfighters. The JC3IEDM-SOA Pilot was enthusiastically received by conference attendees and additional follow-up was requested from attendees, including PEO Soldier and USSOUTHCOM.
